Mars

The helmet, in ancient times, was often a symbol of status, because not everyone could afford to have a helmet. A unique helmet was like a name tag, something similar to Aries motto of “I AM”. The helmet offered some protection when you went into battle, perhaps even offering a little extra courage to its wearer to get into the fray. Often the only thing that could be seen is the eyes, through the slits of steel. This view offered only one perspective–straight ahead, there was no peripheral vision. This notion speaks to Aries' need to charge in and damn the consequences energy. The archetype of Mars is what inspires us to DO something. It’s what motivates us up and out and how we actively, bravely go after what we want. Think about the last time you were laying on the couch, maybe reading a book or watching some TV, when you realize you want something?
It could be the remote because you want to change the channel, or your stomach growls, reminding you haven’t had lunch yet. There is a wish for something to change. In order for that to happen, you have to go after it. It’s the drive to survive. It has to do with strategy and is performative.
How strong are these inclinations?
That’s one way to connect with your Mars energy. As with any archetype, it can be seen in higher or lower forms. The higher forms are connected to healthy competition, drive, passion, vitality, getting something started, the goading, spurring feeling that compels us to jump into making something happen. Anger could fit in either the higher or lower forms. If your anger is helping you accomplish something, like defending yourself or a loved one, but if it’s to hurt someone or to bully, we are dealing with the lower form. Other ways Mars can express itself is impulsively, aggressively, or with force. The image of the helmet speaks to protection but also containment. With Mars, we are dealing with raw energy. It can be instinctual, maybe even unconscious, but learning more about the nature of your Mars requires you to look at your passion and/or anger. If you are noticing a pattern you want to change, consider how you can harness or channel the energy in a different way. Mars rules the signs Aries and Scorpio. You can look at those houses for the places and experiences that may reflect these Martian qualities.
