URANUS

Uranus is the god of change, innovation, breakthroughs and rebellion. If you’ve been asleep at the wheel, a Uranus transit is here to wake you up, almost like an alarm without a snooze button and with a cold splash of water. Uranus is often called the Great Awakener and Richard Tarnas has connected the myth of Prometheus to Uranus. If you don’t know the myth, Prometheus was a Titan god, who felt sorry for humans who had no access to fire in their world and was reliant on the god’s for any help or support they needed in life. Zeus was ok with that. Prometheus wasn’t. Even though he knew he would be punished, Prometheus took fire from Mt. Olympus and shared it with humans. Now, they could see things when dark, keep warm, make food, etc. The element of fire speaks to creativity, inspiration, and initiation. A whole new world was open to them. Prometheus was punished but it was worth what fire brought to the “greater good”. That idea–the greater good, is also a Uranian concept. Uranus is the modern ruler of Aquarius who speaks to the multitudes and the collective. It’s about detaching, and taking a bird’s eye view at what is beneficial for most of us. That usually brings change to an established structure. Uranus is the higher octave of Mercury. What does that mean? Mercury is like basic math, the 2+2=4 variety. Uranus is like the theory of relativity. And, when Uranus is active it brings communications that come in fast like lightning. Sometimes that information is shocking in its insight and out-of-the-box thinking. But, that’s the point: the information or experience is meant to jolt us out of any rut or sleep-walking through life tendencies. Both Mercury and Uranus have the trickster energy. Uranus busts through barriers, dams, or limitations–something is suddenly set free and is able to take new or different actions. Originality, independence, and the impulses toward freedom, even if it’s rebellious, is part of this archetype. What is different, quirky, and  eccentric. We may want to be on watch for some of the shadow sides of Uranus which have to do with rashness, impulsivity, and extremism.

Looking at where your natal Uranus is in your chart, may tell you something about your own rebellious nature. What aspects your Uranus makes to other planets may show you places of ease or hardship you have in expressing this side of your nature. The ancient ruler of Aquarius is Saturn, which is quite the paradox to the modern ruler of Uranus. Perhaps, like Prometheus,  it's important to know the rules and the possible consequences before you break them.

Uranus is a rebel and the changes started by this archetype can often create a domino effect turning our world on its ear. It’s the ultimate maverick–it’s the impulse for change and new frontiers.
